Imagine Dragons- Demons

Fall Out Boy-Irresistable

Catfish and the Bottlemen-Pacifier

The use of the fast cuts at the beginning help to show the whole band which then portrays how not one of the members is bigger than the entire band and they are all equal which relates very well to alternative rock genre as this is common across all videos from this genre.

Another way the editing is used within this particular genre is through the use of slow motions during the video. It is recurrent across several imagine dragons videos as well as videos from this genre as a whole that slow motions are used in order to emphasise the dark and murky nature of this genre.

Another thing that is shown by the editing throughout is the prominence and importance of the instruments as in alternative rock the instruments are everything to the music and regardless of the singer without the band it wouldn't really be alternative rock at all as it wouldn't be able to depict the powerful and almost righteous nature of this genre.

Furthermore as shown in 'Demons' by Imagine Dragons, the screen time is spread out rather evenly as through this use of editing the audience are able to understand how there is no one person who is more important than the whole band as they all bring something essential to it and that is very much the common thing within this genre and it is therefore vital to present this when constructing and editing an alternative rock video.

Editing is when you create or correct some filmed footage, in this case we are looking at editing in music videos and more specifically Alternative/Indie Rock videos. Editing is a totally crucial stage of the construction process due to the fact that you could have the best equipment, actors and actual footage but if it is not put together in a way that makes your target audience able to relate to the song, then it means the video is not going to work. During the actual constructing process you need to be able to actually put the clips together so that all the shots match the section of the song as well as ensuring that the cut transitions help reflect the speed of the music. It may also include adding effects afterwards, for example changing the lighting to as you would in our case possibly make the scene darker to reflect the dark nature of alternative rock.

The video begins with a narrative which is often very common in alternative rock, after this you see the band for the first time and they are all depicted in dark and casual clothing which you would expect to see from this genre and plenty of mid and close ups have been used after the editing in order to convey the dull and shadowy nature associated with this genre.

The video begins on the stage during a concert, the lighting is extremely dark which links very much into the alternative rock genre as the dull and gloomy nature is expressed frequently within this genre. Furthermore the editing portrays use of blue artificial lights in such a sporadic way as there is a frequent use of cut transitions which further demonstrates the gloomy but also unpredictable nature of this genre.

Finally another way the editing is used within this genre is through the way all the instruments are frequently shown throughout the whole video as in alternative rock the guitar, bass and drums are essential to the whole performance and this is displayed clearly through the screen time the editing has provided for the instruments.

Finally fast cuts are used frequently throughout this video and in fact most other alternative rock videos as in order to portray the powerful style of the genre the editing must reflect the fast paced nature of it and this is carried out through the use of fast cut transitions to make it almost seem like controlled chaos.

The video begins with a narrative scene where the setting is extremely dark and straight away the editing emphasises the dark and sinister nature of this genre as this is very much common within the genre of Alternative rock. This darkness is carried on throughout most of the video and this editing implies and demonstrates to the audience how this genre is a very gloomy styled genre.

The next use of editing present in this video and in fact in this genre as a whole is the use of both slow motions and longer shots as within this particular video at the beginning we see longer shots several seconds and during these longer shots we see various examples of slow motions which are used heavily within alternative rock in order to emphasise the dark scene and in turn the dark and almost demonic nature of this genre.

Furthermore the contrast of short shots and fast cut transitions by the editing creates at one moment a calm and in some ways relaxed feeling about it which links in very much to alternative rock. However it can soon change into fast paced cut scenes which definitely connects with the genre of alternative rock.

The final way editing is used within this video alike to other alternative rock videos is the way all of the band members and in fact the other actors within the video, all have very dark clothing which links in very much to the genre of alternative rock and is displayed by the editing giving plenty of screen time devoted to presenting these band members and actors in a gloomy setting where the dark colours they are wearing are enhanced resulting in an accurate portrayal of this genre.
