Digipak Analysis

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers- The Getaway
Imagine Dragons- Night Visions
Two Door Cinema Club- Gameshow
Oasis- Stop the Clocks
The first album I will be analysing is called The Getaway which was released in 2016 by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The first link between the front and back of the album case is the setting as this abandoned and graffiti-ed street portrays continuity to the consumer and you therefore would be able to tell they were from the same album if you were given them separately. Another feature about the album is the font. On both the front cover and the CD itself we see the exact same font which looks almost hand written which makes it much more personable for the consumer. Another way all these elements are linked is through the use of the animals as on the front cover there is a bear, bird and racoon and on the back there is a fox and this peculiar and original incorporation of animals the consumer will be able to easily distinguish a relationship between the two individual covers. Finally the inclusion of the actual band on the inside cover across the double page means that the consumers are able to see who has produced the music and it links all of the parts together to produce a fantastic album. Furthermore the crazy image we see on the inside cover relates very much to the genre of music as it is very random and energetic.
The next digipak I have chosen is Night Visions which was released in 2012 by Imagine Dragons. The first feature I noticed was that in both the front and back cover a dark and misty mix of colours were used and this relates very much to the genre of alternative rock and therefore depicts to the consumer both a direct link between the album and the genre itself but also between both the front and back of the CD. The next aspect of the album I am going to discuss is involving the logo or band name "Imagine Dragons". The way in which this band name is presented is very iconic and it is used for all of their merchandise, albums etc and therefore by using it on this particular album people can easily distinguish and recognise the artists it is made by. Also because of the use of white on such a dark background it really stands out and grabs the consumers attention straight away. Furthermore another way in which the album links together is through the simplistic and minimalistic effect we see throughout due to the fact that on the front cover despite the main image there isn't really much going on and the same can be said for both the back cover and the disk which is shown with dark colours which links back to the genre of alternative rock.
The next digipak I have chosen is called Gameshow and it was released in 2016 by Two Door Cinema Club. The first feature I noticed when analysing it was that throughout the front and back cover, disk and the inner booklet the design was completely consistent as each part portrayed the stretched out tape effect which would ensure that if a consumer was to see each individual section separately they would be able to clearly link them together due to the relationship they possess. Another way each section was linked effectively was due to the simplistic layout. On each part of the album we only see the general design and other than the text which lays out the track we don't see much else and this simplistic and minimalistic design would mean that people would find it much easier to recognise and put together each individual section if they were separate. Finally the use of dark colours in this album were very effective and consistent throughout which helps the consumer recognise the relationship between each part of the album. Furthermore this use of dark colours helps to enhance the white colours which are used for the text and makes it stand out for the consumer to be able to see easily.
The final digipak I have chosen to analyse is called Stop the Clocks and it was released back in 2006 by the incredibly popular Oasis. The first thing I noticed when analysing the album was the consistent use of colours throughout creating a very clear house style. This use of creams and purples in a clear house style would result in the consumer being easily able to link together both individual elements of the album if they were separate. Another feature used within this album is the use of the dart board type image in the background of the front of the album due to the fact that the same image is used for the CD which helps to provide continuity throughout the whole structure of the album ensuring it remains constant. The use of cream on the inner case is significant due to the fact that it matches the main colour used on the front of the case therefore providing continuity once more. Finally the use of the cream text once again links to the consistency between each individual section of the album but it also helps to make the key information of the track list stand out for the consumer as it stands out against the darker colour of the purple.
Here on this page I will be looking into several already released albums and I will be individually analysing each part of the album from the front cover to the actual inside. This will massively help us going forward as we will have a greater understanding of what makes a good album and what are the features that will help to make our album seem much more realistic.
